What remains of the border are the sounds. In Shehyni, we have heard the cries, the screams and the tired looks of men, women and children marked by the exodus.

Every day, the scenes are the same.

Thousands of Ukrainians cross the border. The wait is unbearable. Families break up.

We have seen horror: the terrible consequences of the front in the eyes of soldiers who have left. The horror of the men who come back scarred, like Alexandru who survived the bombing of March 13 in Iaroviv or “Johnty”, a former soldier who fought in Kharkiv and Marioupol.

How do you react when 3,000 refugees from the front are right in front of you?

You have to work in shifts, day and night. Working with strangers and trusting them.

Erik, an ambulance driver from Iraq and Afghanistan, left Norway to convoy wounded to Warsaw. Derek, ex-military, from Ireland to deliver food and military equipment. Pepe, from Spain, to ferry refugees to Poland. Guillaume, who left his studies to coordinate Medyka's French volunteer group. Raada, a volunteer for the Red Crescent, present in the camp day and night. Jimmy, an American, who tells the story of the soldiers who went to the front.

Sasha, a young Ukrainian who could have fled to Europe but decided to stay and help. Andy, an Englishman who brings military supplies back to the front every week. In short, so many men and women who gave their all.

Today, the conflict has been raging for eight months.

It is now blocked to the east, in the Donbass, and families continue to arrive at the borders, by the thousand, in ignorance of their future.
